CCS Wireless Access

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering has developed a wireless local area network, in conjunction with the FSU Wireless Integrated Network, or WIN@FSU.

To utilize the wireless network,

  1. Make sure your wireless card is installed and ready,
  2. Make sure your wireless network configuration is set to get your address automatically (via DHCP), and has nothing in the "SSID" or "SID" box.
  3. Open your web browser (e.g., Firefox, Internet Explorer)
  4. You will see a Security Alert; click Yes to continue.

  5. You will automatically go to the login screen. Type your FSUID and password in the appropriate boxes, and click the Log In button.

  6. Once you are successfully logged in, a popup window will appear. This window is used to logout when you have finished your session. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU LOGOUT CORRECTLY, to avoid any opportunity for another user to utilize your "user credentials" after you leave. If the popup window is inadvertently closed, you may logout by going to http://logout.fsuwin.edu.

In addition to the above, you will need to set your computer to use IPSec encryption. This information is available at the FSUWIN site.

A New Wireless Network

The College of Engineering joined the WIN@FSU wireless network in August 2005. Prior to that time, the College operated its own wireless network. The former network required all users to register their computer with CMS before they could use the wireless service. That has changed with the move to the WIN@FSU network. Now, users are authenticated by their Engineering ID, by another valid FSU ID, or may utilize the network as a guest (without authentication).

Our Wireless Technology

The Engineering section of the WIN@FSU network provides 802.11g/b capability. 802.11g provides up to 54Mbps in the 2.4GHz band. 802.11b provides up to 11Mbps in the 2.4GHz band. Note, however, that the actual throughput is dependent on distance and signal strength; the maximum speed is rarely achieved.

Devices that are compatible with 802.11g, are also compatible with 802.11b, and vice-versa -- but will communicate at the slower speeds of 'b' devices.

The Engineering wireless network does NOT support the 802.11a standard.

Other Wireless Networks

There are to be no other wireless (802.11) networks at the College. Other wireless networks can cause interference with our official network, reducing performance and range for all users; and also represent an additional security risk.

Any unauthorized wireless networks detected by CMS or FSU Information Technology Services staff, will be deactivated in the most expedient manner possible. Repeated violations will be reported to the appropriate Department Chair or the Dean.

If there is an issue of coverage with our wireless network, we will be pleased to work with the affected parties to find an appropriate resolution.
