Additional Department Requirements
In addition to the admission requirements of each University, a candidate for post-baccalaureate study in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering must also meet the following requirements:

- A baccalaureate degree in chemical/biomedical engineering or an allied field from an accredited college or university. Depending on the students’ academic background certain undergraduate classes might have to be taken in order to handle and be successful in a chemical/biomedical engineering curriculum.
- An undergraduate upper-division or graduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher.
- The GRE requirement has been waived (and extended) for all engineering master’s applicants through Fall 2026.
- CV/Resume - Information should be current.
- Statement of Purpose – Outlining your research and career goals. We want to know how your background and prior training make you the right candidate and why FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is a good fit for you.
- Two Letters of Recommendation – Academics or professionals who can comment on the academic and research potential of the applicant.

You only need to apply through one university. FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is a joint college shared by two universities, Florida A&M University and Florida State University. The program and coursework will be the same no matter which university you apply through. However, upon completion of the degree, you will only earn a diploma from one university.
All required application materials listed above must be on file, and the fee paid, before an application is considered complete and ready for review. We encourage you to submit and complete your application early. The graduate admissions committee reviews completed applications throughout the open application period, which allows you to quickly receive an admissions decision.
Preparatory Courses
Students who do not have a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering may be required to complete a department-designated sequence of undergraduate courses with grade of “B” or higher in each course. In all cases, an applicant must have taken a course in differential equations prior to their matriculation and have completed sequences in basic sciences (biology, chemistry, and physics). Typical preparatory undergraduate course-sequences for graduate courses may include, but are not limited to, the following courses:
- ECH 3101 - Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (3)
- ECH 3266 - Transport Phenomena I (3)
- ECH 3418 - Separations Processes (3)
- ECH 3854 - Chemical Engineering Computations (3
- ECH 4267 - Transport Phenomena II (3)
- ECH 4504 - Kinetics and Reactor Design (3)
If necessary, sophomore pre-requisite classes ECH 3023 (Mass and Energy Balances I), ECH 3024 (Mass and Energy Balances II, and ECH 3301 (Process Analysis and Design) may be required prior to taking the above listed classes.
Additional courses in subjects including mathematics, chemistry, physics, and general engineering may also be required. Departmental financial support may not be available for graduate students taking undergraduate courses. Transfer credit from another institution is limited to six (6) semester hours with departmental approval provided that those courses were not already counted towards another degree. Acceptance of equivalent courses is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, following petition to the Graduate Committee.

Funding
The Department offers graduate assistantships in forms of research assistantships and/or teaching assistantships, which includes competitive stipends, tuition waivers, and student health care coverage. By applying to PhD programs by departmental application deadlines you will automatically be under consideration for student funding. These can be awarded as departmental TA or RA by individual faculty basis. These awards are renewable provided satisfactory performance. For more details on TA support, please contact Shelly Huang Leparulo (Graduate Coordinator) or particular faculty of interest for information on RA support.
Funding through assistantships is typically reserved for PhD students, and all current PhD students are supported by these assistantships.Since funding is limited, priority consideration for funding is given to doctoral applicants. Departmental funding offers are made at both the time of admission and after acceptance. All applicants are automatically considered for TA funding when they apply. If you are selected for a Graduate Assistantship position, you will receive an official letter, via email, from the department.
