ME Graduate Advising

In mid-October and early March of each year, all continuing graduate students are required to consult with their major professor to (1) create a course schedule for the next term and (2) discuss their academic and graduate assistant evaluations. Below are the required forms for each term.

      Spring Advising

      Registration and Enrollment Requirements

      FAMU Students

      • Summer: FAMU students must register for at least 1 credit hour of graduate-level coursework during the summer term.
      • Fall/Spring: FAMU students supported by the Department/University as a research assistant, teaching assistant or university fellow must register for at least 9 credit hours of graduate-level coursework.

      FSU Students

      • Summer: FSU students supported by the Department/University as a research assistant, teaching assistant or university fellow must register for at least 9 credit hours of graduate-level coursework in the summer.
      • Fall/Spring: FSU students supported by the Department/University as a research assistant, teaching assistant or university fellow must register for at least 9 credit hours of graduate-level coursework in the summer.

      Doctoral Candidates

      Once you have passed the preliminary exam you MUST register for a minimum of 3 credit hours of EML 6980 - Dissertation each semester until you graduate (including the summer term). You are no longer eligible to register for EML 5905 – DIS, or EML 5910 - Supervised Research.

      DIS, SR, Thesis and Dissertation Courses

      The following courses require instructor approval prior to registration and must be requested using the academic advising form. Students MUST include a title for the course:

      • EML 5905 – Directed Individual Study (DIS) [All students]
      • EML 5910 – Supervised Research (SR) [All students; limited to a max of 5 credit hours]
      • EML 5971 – Thesis (MS students; Must have a valid Thesis Committee)
      • EML 6980 – Dissertation (PhD students; Must have passed the Preliminary Exam)

      Final Term Registration

      Both universities require students to register for thesis or dissertation hours in their final term, even if the student has satisfied the thesis or dissertation credit requirement for their degree. See Graduation Polices and Procedures section for additional information. Be sure to do the following:

      1. Check the Final Term box on your advising form
      2. Have your advisor check and sign the Thesis/Dissertation Defense section on your advising form. You cannot register for Defense without your advisors approval
      3. Register for a full course load: 9 credit hours in the Fall/Spring or 6 credit hours in the Summer. At least 3 of the 9 credit hours must be thesis or dissertation credit, even if you have already satisfied the thesis or dissertation credit hours requirement.
      4. File your Notice of Intent to graduate form.
