For someone as committed to service as Adam O’Neill, the appeal of simultaneously working in an organization on both the inside and outside was strong.

“I want to be an inspiration to students,” Ja’Niyah Allen exclaims. “To show them there is more out there and show them what is possible.”

Allen is a fourth-year mechanical engineering student from Orlando and serves on the Student Engineering Leadership Board (SELB) at FAMU-FSU Engineering. Recently, we talked with Allen about some of the objectives she has for the group that acts in an advisory and leadership capacity for students.

On March 22, 2018, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering student chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was awarded Southeastern Region III Chapter of the Year. This region encompasses five states and the Bahamas. Representing the college, 56 NSBE chapter members attended the 44th annual convention in Pittsburgh. This is the first time since 2006 the chapter has won the award.

Eight freshmen engineering students from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering won third place in the Advancing Minorities Interest in Engineering (AMIE) Design Challenge. The event was hosted at the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) conference held in February, 2019 in Washington, D.C. A total of 11 teams from various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) participated in the event. 

First-year engineering doctoral student Jonathan Lee recently received the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship. The fellowship is considered one of the country’s most prestigious honors for graduate students beginning their studies. Lee will start his graduate studies at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (via Florida State University) after graduating with his bachelor’s in material science and engineering from the University of California-Berkeley this spring. 

Florida State University researchers have discovered a novel way to improve the performance of electrical wires used in high-temperature superconductors (HTS), findings that have the potential to power a new generation of particle accelerators.

A mechanical engineering researcher at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering will use the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award to advance the prediction and mitigation of fire spread into wildfire-prone areas. Her findings may elevate the importance of fire science in the national landscape.

Engineering Senior Design Day 2021 was a virtual showcase of the engineering skills and talent in FAMU-FSU Engineering’s senior class. Two teams received top honors as Best Overall and Best Abstract awardees, out of the 86 engineering design teams made up of Florida A&M and Florida State university students.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Nobel laureate in physics Richard Feynman once described turbulence as “the most important unsolved problem of classical physics.”

Understanding turbulence in classical fluids like water and air is difficult partly because of the challenge in identifying the vortices swirling within those fluids. Locating vortex tubes and tracking their motion could greatly simplify the modeling of turbulence.
