College Awards Night Celebrates Engineering’s People and Accomplishments

On April 7, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering honored outstanding faculty and staff at the annual College Awards Night Banquet at the Capital City Country Club in Tallahassee, Florida. Ditching their sneakers, the engineering campus community celebrated the success of their students and peers on a warm night of fellowship.

The awards recognize employees who go above and beyond their day-to-day duties to serve the engineering campus community. Students from several top senior design teams were also honored at the event.

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is a new technology gaining popularity in the 21st century. 3D printing has several advantages over regular manufacturing and machining, including the means to produce complex shapes and the need for only one machine. This makes it a worthy and frugal option.

We were tasked with conducting an industrial engineering review and improvement process of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) shop at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA. The project goal was to develop a new layout design for the PCB manufacturing facility, maximizing throughput for PCB part #100500.

The National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) asked us to upgrade the 7th Special Forces Group (SFG) jungle uniforms. Current uniforms are outdated and lack the durability needed by units operating in triple canopy jungles. The uniforms are prone to damage and wear from terrain, vegetation, bacteria and mold. They also have poor breathability and cause discomfort and disease such as chafing and jungle rot. We intensively researched different materials and newer design technologies to improve the most important uniform component: jungle pants.

Nearly twenty years ago, efforts towards developing a power generation method for the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) was paused when attention shifted to desert combat. Since then, USSOCOM has refocused on power generating methods that support their operations.
