From the cleaning solutions disinfecting kitchen counters to the ventilators helping keep patients alive, chemical and biomedical engineers have a big role to play in humanity’s efforts to fight COVID-19.
Lauren Daley hopes to bring more unity to the FAMU-FSU Engineering, where students from Florida A&M and Florida State universities take engineering courses.
“I hope we can represent the college of engineering as a community, united in every way, “Daley says. “Not just between the two universities but with the faculty and the students. I hope we can bring more equivalence and compassion to the school.”
Shannon Helsper and her colleagues recently earned the Journal of Magnetic Resonance (JMR) Elsevier Science award for an outstanding paper at the 61st Experimental National Magnetic Resonance Conference (ENC). The Elsevier award is given for the best paper submitted by a graduate student or postdoctoral student.
Each weekday, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering undergraduates Herbert Lopez, Ana De Leon, Paola Chavez and Austin Rodriguez collaborate at the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) research facility to create a novel medium voltage cable that aims to have reduced reactive power than the ones currently used throughout the continental U.S. If they are successful, the cable could pave the way for improved power transmission efficiency on electric grids across the nation.
Lauren Daly, a biomedical engineering student at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, was recently awarded an FSU IDEA grant from the Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement (CRE). The grant, funded by the Scott and Ina McNichols Undergraduate Research Award at Florida State University, will enable Daly to continue stem cell research at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL).
When FAMU-FSU Engineering student Bobby Haney first tried to explain to his parents that he wanted to continue going to school after graduating, his parents were less than enthusiastic. After all, as a chemical engineering graduate with his bachelor’s degree he could get a job with a guaranteed income right away. Haney explained that this is the type of decision that students who come from low-income situations like his have to face when thinking about pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree. But for him, there was never a doubt.
FAMU-FSU Engineering professor Jose Mendoza-Cortes is preparing students for the world they will inhabit in the coming twenty-plus years, a time when an ample population of jobs will disappear, and others – jobs that require more specialized, sophisticated skills – will be the norm.

Florida State University’s iGEM team is gearing for its second trip to the 2018 iGEM Giant Jamboree in Boston this fall.
The Giant Jamboree features work from the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition and is projected to host nearly 300 international, interdisciplinary teams. These teams study a need or problem centered around biological engineering, then collaborate to design, build, and test solutions.
On March 22, 2018, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering student chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was awarded Southeastern Region III Chapter of the Year. This region encompasses five states and the Bahamas. Representing the college, 56 NSBE chapter members attended the 44th annual convention in Pittsburgh. This is the first time since 2006 the chapter has won the award.
