Researchers Use Artificial Intelligence to Find Road Safety Issues in School Zones
Researchers at the Resilient Infrastructure and Disaster Response Center (RIDER) are using artificial intelligence and aerial imaging to make Florida’s school zones safer.
A study led by researchers at RIDER and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering uses computer vision tools to replace manual inventories of road features in school zones. The study was published by Transportation Research Record.
Civil Engineering Teams Show Off Expertise for Fall Senior Design Day
With excitement in the air, students from the department of civil and environmental engineering (CEE) at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering had an opportunity to demonstrate their skills at the Fall Senior Design Day.
The event was held within the department and showcased presentations of various projects and prototypes by students in front of a panel of judges. A larger, college-wide event happens annually at the end of the spring semester.

Tracking Storm Debris for Better Management and Resource Allocation
When a hurricane or other major disaster hits, vegetative storm debris is one of the biggest challenges a community faces.
While storm-damaged vegetation could potentially be a source for mulch or other products, that often isn’t its fate. Fallen trees, branches and plant debris degrades over time and loses value as a sustainable recycling resource.
Advancing Materials Testing Needed to Build Better Roads
In a new study, FAMU-FSU researchers are working with the Federal Highway’s Asphalt Materials Research Program to improve our everyday commute.
Engineering Postdoctoral Researchers Honored in FSU Research Competition
Florida State University’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPDA) sponsored the annual five-minute research competition in honor of National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week in the Fall. The event was open to postdoctoral researchers from colleges and departments at FSU. FSU has more than 250 postdocs.
Two researchers representing the department of civil and environmental engineering received awards. A panel of judges and peers chose the winners.
