Four materials science and engineering graduate students from Florida State University and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering were recently named winners of the 2023 James Brooks Symposium oral presentation competition.
The April 21, 2023 competition was open to students in the interdisciplinary Materials Science and Engineering graduate program at the college. Each student talked about their current research.
“I was impressed by the breadth of the students’ research and the high quality of their presentations,” said Eric Hellstrom, an engineering professor and director of the Materials Science and Engineering program.
The symposium was established in 2017 to honor the memory of James Brooks, an FSU physics professor who died in 2014 and was instrumental in establishing the Materials Science and Engineering program at FSU. The symposium has been held each spring semester except during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Finalists in the speaking competition submitted an abstract, gave a 30-minute talk and fielded questions on their presentations. A panel of three faculty members chose the winners.
