Eight FAMU-FSU College of Engineering students were inducted into the Florida State University Torchbearer 100 on April 25. The organization recognizes 100 outstanding undergraduate leaders who have made significant contributions as a student at FSU. The students shared their joy in being selected and their plans for the future.

Madison Burke, Biomedical Engineering

Throughout my time at FSU, I never imagined all the challenges in store for me. However, through adversity, I learned how to hone my leadership capabilities. I used this knowledge to help and guide others, and it has been so rewarding. I am honored to receive the Torchbearer 100 award. I hope I have inspired others to lead when I am gone. I plan to work with Biosense Webster, a Johnson and Johnson company, in June. After training, I will have the chance to improve lives by working with surgeons during catheter ablation procedures. I am beyond excited to see what life has in store next!

Shemar Charles, Computer Engineering

As an inductee for the Class of the 2023 Torchbearer 100 program, it is an absolute honor to be recognized. My ambitions and values are to continue making an impact within my community at Florida State University and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering through service and STEM while also leaving a meaningful impact on the next generation of students here at FSU. I plan to give back to FSU by remaining involved in the FAMU-FSU Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, the founding Chapter of Progressive Black Men Inc., The Renegade Leadership Honor Society, and the Phi Delta Chapter of Theta Tau. The College of Engineering has prepared me for my career and future endeavors after graduation, and I’d like to continue doing that for the next set of students who come after me.

This award inspires me to continue pursuing excellence in all areas of my life and to give back to the organizations and communities that have helped me throughout college. In 2024, I have the honor to serve as the FSU Student Body Vice President. After graduation, I hope to utilize my chemical engineering degree to pursue a career in sustainable materials in the fashion industry. I am grateful to be chosen as a Torchbearer 100 2023 Inductee Class member.

Ashley David, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering has given me endless opportunities to learn and strive toward the core values of the Torchbearer 100: leadership, community service, and academic excellence. I will uphold these values as I graduate and continue my engineering career. I am very grateful to have been chosen to be part of the 2023 Torchbearer 100 cohort. Ashley plans to begin her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University this summer.

I am honored to be part of the 2023 Inductee Class for the Torchbearer 100 program. Giving back to the university and community is a reward, but receiving this recognition motivates me to want to do more. After graduation, I hope to remain involved with the two organizations that impacted my college experience, Tau Beta Pi, and Pi Beta Phi, and do whatever I can to ensure future members have the experience I did. It was amazing!

Madison Kirkpatrick, Civil Engineering

Being part of the Torchbearer 100 2023 inductee class is an honor. My leadership and service experiences at Florida State University have helped shape me into the person I am today, and I am so thankful to have had those opportunities. I will be graduating this May, and I plan to continue my leadership and service work through my job as a Project Engineer with The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and staying involved with the Society of Women Engineers.

Gregory Moller, Chemical-Materials Engineering

I am honored to be part of the 2023 class of Torchbearer 100 inductees among so many of my incredible peers! The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Florida State University, and the Marching Chiefs have provided unique spaces for me to grow as a leader, academic, and person, which have been invaluable in preparing me to continue my education in graduate school and seeking further opportunities for leadership and professional development. Gregory plans to begin his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University this fall.

I am tremendously pleased to be selected for the Torchbearer 100 award and continue to exemplify what it means to be a Torchbearer 100 recipient in my last year of college. I want to continue to grow alongside and with my community at FSU and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
