Undergraduate research is a top priority for the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

We understand the value of getting undergraduate engineering students involved in the research lab often and early because the benefits are undeniable. In fact, undergrads who work in engineering research labs at our college are more likely to make better grades, discover their engineering “passion area” sooner and even to go on to graduate school. Therefore, we are committed to offering many vibrant opportunities for undergraduate students at our college to participate in engineering research alongside our faculty.

Undergrad Research Opportunities

Improve Academics & Community

Many of our departments offer academic support and community outreach as part of research opportunities, including:

  • Free Peer Tutoring
  • Academic Support Programs
  • Educational Enrichment
  • K-12 STEM Outreach
  • Research & Career Mentoring
  • Summer Research Experiences
  • Academic Scholarships

Make an Impact

Students in our undergraduate research programs work alongside faculty researchers in cutting-edge engineering labs. You will have the chance to learn how to work in a lab and also contribute to the very science that is the backbone of your education. The labs/centers/programs where you might work include:

  • Aero-Propulsion, Mechatronics and Energy (AME) Center
  • ASTERIX Consortium
  • Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS)
  • Center for Intelligent, Systems, Control, and Robotics (CISCOR)
  • Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP)
  • High-Performance Materials Institute (HPMI)
  • National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (Mag Lab)
  • Resilient Infrastructure & Disaster Response (RIDER) Center

Find Your Field

Spanning most of our five engineering departments, undergraduate research opportunities offer something for everyone. We have projects available that allow you to learn more about a specific interest or even take a different discipline for a “test drive.” In addition, some of our opportunities for well-qualified students offer a stipend (read: paycheck!) that takes the place of another job.

  • Chemical and biomedical engineering
  • Civil and environmental engineering
  • Electrical and computer engineering
  • Industrial and manufacturing engineering
  • Mechanical and aerospace engineering

A great way to find work in a lab is just to ask! Talk with your professors during office hours about what they’re working on and how you can get involved. If you are a good student, many will find a place for you to get experience while helping with their research projects.

CHEMICAL & BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

The Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering offers an Undergraduate Research Program (URP) to encourage talented juniors and seniors to undertake independent and original research as part of their undergraduate experience. More info

CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

Through the many faculty projects and labs on our campus and at Florida A&M and Florida State universities, the CEE department offers several ways to work on research. Browse current research opportunities for more information.

ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING

ime undergraduate research groupThe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers several areas for undergraduate research, including via The ASTERIX Consortium, a five-year DoE/MSIPP funded Consortium that supports (1) capacity building (research) and (2) workforce development (training) in National Security Enterprise (NSE) interests. ECE also offers a robust undergraduate research program in superconducting materials and power applications at CAPS.

INDUSTRIAL & MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING

Our IME department hosts several undergraduate opportunities each year, and some are ongoing. The IME Summer REU Program is a full-spectrum research experience for those undergrads interested in an advanced degree. The CREST program is a funded pathway to a research-based, advanced degree for qualified engineering students. There are more opportunities to explore in IME; contact the department chair for more information.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

The mechanical engineering department has research-active faculty and nationally-recognized labs that conduct advanced studies over a broad range of topics. If you are interested in robotics, experimental and computational aerodynamics, advanced materials research, energy sustainability, quantum computing, or other aspects of mechanical engineering, there may be a place for you. Contact the department chair for more information.
