Caring About the Environment Is This Grad Student’s Way of Giving Back

Benhur Asefaw, a graduate student at Florida State University and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, received a scholarship from the Coastal Plains Chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA) for his work with the environment.

“The AWMA scholarship is an amazing opportunity as it opens doors from different sectors,” Asefaw said. “Persistence paid off, and I look forward to growing from the experience.”

Industrial and Civil Engineers Showcase Research for Sheltering Vulnerable Populations at the Annual Governor’s Hurricane Conference

Researchers from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and the Florida State University College of Social Work shared their expertise on sheltering vulnerable populations safely in a disaster at the annual Florida Governor’s Hurricane Conference in West Palm Beach, Florida. Conference attendees had the opportunity to hear from experts on new methods to prepare Floridians for a hurricane or tropical storm.

Researchers Convert Food Waste to Sustainable Energy Using Microwave Technology

In the U.S., over 80 billion pounds of food waste is discarded annually, and the bulk of it is deposited in landfills. Beyond the storage issue, food waste emits methane, contributing to 11% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

In a new Department of Energy (DOE) study, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and Florida A&M University (FAMU) researchers have discovered a new method to convert food waste into sustainable energy. Their discovery may revolutionize the way food waste is processed for fuel and help promote a sustainable energy source for the future.
