FAMU-FSU College of Engineering mechanical engineering students Michael Romega, Kristine Villarino, Andrew Burkhardt, Caleb Ward and Max McCammon’s revolutionary device to treat patients with lung injuries, “extraBREATH,” won the “People’s Choice Award” for the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) InVenture competition.

It is the second year Florida State University was the host of the event resembling a Shark Tank competition. Team extraBreath represented FSU and the joint college in the event featuring 12 ACC conference schools.

ACC InVenture Winners

  • LiveDrive represented by Notre Dame took first place and received a check for $15,000. The device is a suite of alternative wheelchair control solutions, including eye, voice and mobile joystick control that allows individuals to control their power wheelchairs regardless of need or stage of disease progression.
  • Second place: SaveOr from Duke and Intervea from Syracuse tied for 2nd place and received a check for $10,000. Duke’s SaveOr is a software platform to help families document and manage the ownership, history, and transfer of their tangible personal property for estate purposes. Syracuse’s Intervea is an AI-powered patient medication compliance platform that can help avoid recurrent and preventable emergency room visits.
  • Third place: extraBREATH from FSU won the “People’s Choice Award” and received a check for $5,000. The device the FSU designed can treat patients with severe lung injuries while eliminating the need for medical sedation. The team is supported in part by the Mayo Clinic.
