The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Systems Engineering program at FSU Panama City recently received a three-year grant from Amentum, a partner of NASA.

The competitive funding will enable them to deliver Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) bootcamps for professionals at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC).

Leading NASA Workforce Development at Kennedy Space Center

Under the leadership of systems engineering professors Danny Georgiadis and David Gross, the college launched its first-of-its-kind graduate-level accelerated training initiative, marking a significant milestone in expanding systems engineering education in direct support of NASA’s exploration objectives.

The inaugural bootcamp was held in the last two weeks of August, providing training to 30 residents, scientists and engineers. The intensive curriculum covered the fundamentals of systems engineering, including requirements writing, interpretation, verification and validation methods; risk identification; management; integration testing; simulation studies including Monte Carlo simulations for uncertainties; and Model-Based Systems Engineering and Digital Engineering techniques.

Industry Recognition and Academic Excellence

“What an honor it was to be selected among such talented universities in and around NASA Kennedy Space Center. Coming from the Panhandle down to KSC was a true delight and being able to train such gifted engineers and scientists - many of whom have already earned advance degrees, was incredibly rewarding,” Georgiadis said. “Systems engineering is an agnostic discipline that applies to any complex system. Whether you examine the bottom of the ocean or a rocket headed to Mars, the skills and knowledge we shared can be applied equally.”

Supporting NASA’s Artemis Campaign

The Systems Engineering and Integration bootcamp program is designed to equip the KSC workforce with the applied skills and systems engineering knowledge essential to the success of NASA’s Artemis campaign, which aims to establish a long-term presence on the Moon as a stepping stone for future Mars exploration.

Advanced Technology Integration

Amentum supports NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program at Kennedy Space Center under the Consolidated Operations, Management, Flight Hardware Processing and Launch Operations for programs like Artemis, including the assembly, integration, testing and launch of rockets and spacecraft.
