Broward County Native Advances Computer Engineering Career with Second Verizon Summer Internship

For Jeremiah Gauthier, a senior computer engineering student from Broward County, Florida, spending his summer with Verizon represents far more than gaining hands-on technical experience—it’s about contributing to the critical network infrastructure systems that maintain global connectivity.

Currently completing his second internship with the Fortune 100 telecommunications company, Gauthier serves as a network performance intern within Verizon’s Power, Space & Cooling Engineering & Construction Team. His specialized role focuses on the essential hardware infrastructure that supports the company’s extensive network systems.

The Critical Role of Network Infrastructure Engineering

“People see the virtual side of things—the apps, the calls, the service—but none of that would be possible without well-maintained hardware,” Gauthier explained. “Cooling is one of the most important aspects. If the equipment overheats, it shuts down. That can cause failures across the network.”

Gauthier’s comprehensive 10-week paid internship is at Verizon’s headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. During the program, he resided at Rutgers University through their summer housing initiative, providing convenient access to the corporate office and metropolitan opportunities. His internship experience encompasses diverse responsibilities, from conducting site visits in Manhattan to managing complex project coordination tasks and facilitating Q&A sessions with senior leadership.

Expanding Technical Expertise Through Hands-On Experience

“I’ve learned so much this summer,” Gauthier noted. “Last year, I was focused more on the coding and data analytics side. This year, I’m out in the field, working hands-on with equipment, learning how everything functions and getting direct exposure to upper-level management.”

The internship experience extends beyond technical development. Gauthier recently secured raffle tickets to attend a FIFA World Cup game alongside Verizon’s CEO, describing the opportunity as an unforgettable highlight of his professional development journey.

Engineering Foundation and Academic Pathway

Gauthier’s trajectory toward computer engineering began early, rooted in his natural aptitude for mathematics and technology. His passion for STEM fields emerged during childhood and crystallized by eighth grade when he enrolled in an engineering program. He subsequently joined the engineering track at Everglades High School, where his fascination with video games and computer systems solidified his interest in computer engineering.

“I’ve always liked figuring out how things work,” he reflected. “Engineering felt like the perfect path for me.”

His professional experience portfolio includes a previous internship at Northrop Grumman following his freshman year, before returning to Verizon for his second consecutive summer engagement. Following graduation, Gauthier aspires to join Verizon full-time through the company’s competitive leadership development program.

FAMU-FSU Engineering Excellence and Student Support Programs

As a proud Rattler, Gauthier credits a comprehensive trio of programs at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering with preparing him for these prestigious internship opportunities. His academic journey began with the Engineering Concepts Institute (ECI) during the summer preceding his freshman year, continued with participation in the Engineering Living-Learning Community (LLC) throughout his first year and includes ongoing involvement in the Educating Engineering Students Innovatively (EESI) program since his sophomore year.

“I wouldn’t have gotten these internships without the training and support I’ve received through those programs,” Gauthier emphasized. “Charmane Caldwell, Ph.D., director of Student Access at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, has mentored me since the beginning. She’s helped with everything—resumes, interviews, professional development, study tips—you name it.”

First-Generation Engineering Student Leadership and Mentorship

As a first-generation engineer, Gauthier recognizes the critical importance of mentorship and representation in engineering.

“My mom is a teacher and my dad’s an entrepreneur and Bethune-Cookman alum,” he said enthusiastically. “It’s been funny being at FAMU, our rival school, but they’re proud of me. I’m trying to be the first engineer in the family.”

Strategic Advice for Aspiring Engineering Professionals

Gauthier’s guidance for fellow students emphasizes proactive exploration and strategic networking.

“Start looking for internships early—around September or October—and take a chance on something new,” he advised. “I switched companies after my first internship, and it worked out better than I imagined. Talk to people, ask questions and don’t be afraid to reach out. Networking matters.”

Preparing for Professional Engineering Career Success

As Gauthier approaches his senior year and contemplates post-graduation opportunities, he expresses confidence in his comprehensive skill development and professional readiness.

“I’ve developed technical skills, leadership skills and confidence,” he concluded. “Wherever I go, I know I can make an impact.”
