Student scholars from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering shine at BEYA conference

Engineering students Latarence Butts and Daziyah Sullivan were honored at BEYA, the Black Engineers of the Year Awards STEM Conference this year. The scholars won academic leadership awards at the event February 2018 event held in Washington D.C. 

“To achieve this kind of award student leaders have to be outstanding contributors to their schools and communities, explained Lango Deen of CCG Magazine, a spokesperson for the event. “They are dedicated scholars who shine in the classroom.”    

FSU senior Taylor J. Davis graduates with not one, but two engineering degrees

Taylor J. Davis isn’t one to shy away from the hard stuff. In fact, he almost seems to thrive on the grueling pace of engineering education. On May 4, he leaves the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering with dual degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering, an accomplishment very few even attempt.

He’s also leaving with a working model for a hydroelectric generator, a unique project that embodies Davis’ passion for mechanics and the environment and may just be the key to his future.

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, the nation’s only joint engineering college shared between two institutions—Florida A&M and Florida State universities—gained seven points in the annual graduate and professional programs rankings by U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 edition of “Best Graduate Schools.”

Hands-free Wheelchair Umbrella Wins FSU 'inNOLEvation Challenge'

A team of six student engineers, who brainstormed a hands-free umbrella for wheelchairs, won the grand prize of $10,000 in Florida State University’s annual InNOLEvation® Challenge sponsored by the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship.

The students, all seniors at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, created an umbrella called DriGo that automatically deploys when a person pushes a lever located behind the left elbow.

Claire Kelly, an industrial engineering student, said there’s nothing else like DriGo on the market.

Payne’s Passion for inspiring young people into STEM careers

Hubert (Hubie) Payne is the Vice President and manager of Analog Engineering Operations for Texas Instruments (TI) Incorporated. He earned a B.S. at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering through FSU in 1997. As an executive and leader driving innovation and effective technical solutions, he leads a global team responsible for providing engineering support and driving down production costs across tens of thousands of integrated circuits.

FAMU-FSU College of Engineering hosts first Artificial Intelligence-themed Hackathon sponsored by Intel

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is hosting a Hackathon sponsored by Intel during the first weekend in September. The event, on September 7-8, 2018, is open to students from all majors from either Florida A&M University or Florida State University. Students will learn about the social and ethical impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) through a series of workshops, hands-on interactive labs, technical talks and a design competition.
