Engineering Alumna Uses Her Voice to Pay It Forward and Inspire Women in STEM

Danica “Dani” Forestal graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and Florida State University in 2020 and has been using her experience to support women in STEM ever since. 

The electrical engineer was recently crowned “Miss Raleigh USA” in North Carolina and will compete for Miss North Carolina USA in February. She hopes to use the platform to amplify awareness about the causes she cares about, like having more women in STEM.

Northrop Grumman Foundation Awards $1.5M Grant to Establish New STEM Research and Education Program to Meet Areas of National Need

Electrical engineering encompasses several critical skills areas of national need, as identified by the U.S. government. With a new $1.5 million grant from the Northrop Grumman Foundation, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering will ramp up its research activity in these areas. The funds will also support graduate and undergraduate students at the college in these areas.

New Grants for Advanced Research Equipment Will Enhance Training for Future Minority STEM Faculty

Through Florida A&M University, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering recently received a total of $7.5 million in funding for state-of-the-art research equipment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). These three equipment grants are set aside for research programs associated with HBCUs and will enhance the college’s production of Black and other minority future engineering faculty.

When Roger McGinnis was an officer serving on U.S. Navy ships, a problem with the onboard electrical system typically meant enduring a power outage that could last up to several hours.

Now, as a director of Florida State University’s Center for Advanced Power Systems, or CAPS, McGinnis oversees an entity dedicated to finding solutions that would instantly resolve those problems.
