Two Tenure-Track Positions in Infrastructure Systems and Water Resources

Tenure Track

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
(Permanent, Tenure Track Positions)

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Florida A&M University – Florida State University (FAMU-FSU) joint College of Engineering invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions. The successful candidates will work in areas that complement and strengthen existing faculty research and teaching in infrastructure systems and water resources. We expect to hire at the Assistant Professor rank, but well-qualified candidates will be considered at a higher rank.

Although the search is open to highly qualified applicants in a broad range of disciplines in these subjects, primary areas of interest are specified as follows.

Infrastructure Systems (Job ID: 56244):

We seek highly qualified applicants with research in infrastructure as a system considering interactions between components. Applicants with primary expertise in component-level resilience and/or sustainability with minimum consideration of system aspects will not be competitive. Example areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Quantification of risk in spatially and functionally interconnected infrastructure systems
  • Resilience of critical infrastructure systems under compounding hazards
  • Integration of systems with socio-technological-infrastructure connections
  • Design and modeling of interfaces between various independent infrastructure systems
  • Resilient and sustainable infrastructure modeling with a strong methodological focus on system aspects

Water Resources (Job ID: 56261):

Applicants should have expertise in one or more areas of integrated surface and groundwater management, optimization and risk analysis, remote sensing of water resources, ecosystem restoration, and water infrastructure resilience and sustainability in a changing climate, compounding flood events. Example areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Impact of changing climate and landcover change on regional and large-scale watershed hydrology
  • Interactions of terrestrial and coastal surface and ground water systems
  • Application of data science (such as artificial intelligence and machine learning on water resources)
  • Public health and socioenvironmental impacts of flood events, pollution, and hydroclimatic extremes

About the Joint College

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is the nexus of two major public universities, each with a distinct mission but focused on world-class engineering education and research. Created by the Florida Legislature in 1982, the joint institution is the college of engineering for both Florida A&M and Florida State universities. This unique combination of focus, resources and mission from our parent institutions has created on our campus a truly innovative atmosphere that leverages the benefits of the traditional HBCU model with the innovations of an R-1 public research university. After completing pre-requisites at their home institution, FAMU and FSU students learn, study and research together at our independent campus with joint-appointed faculty and staff. Students graduate from their enrolling university and from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Both FAMU and FSU are part of the State University System of Florida and are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Additionally, all seven (7) of the college’s eligible undergraduate degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.

About the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has a strong and growing reputation with a special focus on disaster resilience and sustainability, recently establishing the Center for Resilient Infrastructure and Disaster Response (RIDER). The successful candidate will join 29 full-time faculty members in a department with approximately 400 undergraduate and over 100 graduate students and will work closely with colleagues at the RIDER Center, the FAMU School of the Environment, the FSU Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science, and various centers on both campuses.
