ECE Summer Research Program Showcase
Unique Career Opportunity for Graduating Seniors in Select Majors
My name is Kevin Ogle, and I serve as the Department Chair for Aerospace Studies and Commander of the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AFROTC) at Florida State University. I'm reaching out to share an exciting and time-sensitive career opportunity for graduating seniors in select majors.
About the Program: In partnership with the Air Force Accession Center, Headquarters AFROTC is launching a pilot initiative to identify and commission high-performing seniors in critical academic disciplines. Selected students will attend Officer Training School (OTS) immediately following graduation and, upon successful completion, will be commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force.
Target Majors:
- Electrical Engineering
- Meteorology
- Nursing
- Russian Language and Culture
- Chinese Language and Culture
Program Requirements (administered by the Department of Aerospace Studies):
- Competitive selection among all applicants
- Participation in physical training twice weekly
- Attendance at a weekly Leadership Laboratory
- Successful completion of the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT)
- Initiation of a Department of Defense medical evaluation
- Initiation of a Department of Defense security clearance investigation
Expected Benefits (pending final approval):
- Up to $18,000 in tuition assistance for the senior year
- $450 per semester for books and supplies
- $300 monthly stipend
- Full salary and benefits upon commissioning as a Second Lieutenant
This initiative is designed to meet critical Air Force needs while offering a unique pathway for students who may have discovered an interest in military service later in their academic journey. Typically, such opportunities require 3–4 years of AFROTC participation—this pilot program offers a fast-tracked alternative.
I look forward to speaking with interested students about this program in an information session at the college, which will be scheduled soon.

Reminder: the 2025-2026 UNOLS-MATE Long-term Internship Application is due AUGUST 10, 2025
The University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) is pleased to announce the UNOLS-MATE MARINE TECHNICAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2025-2026 LONG-TERM INTERNSHIP
INTERNSHIP DATES: NOVEMBER 3, 2025 THROUGH MAY 22, 2026
DEADLINE TO APPLY: AUGUST 10, 2025
Hosting Institution: This is an incredible opportunity to intern with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s (WHOI) National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF) providing land-based technical support during the HOV Alvin overhaul period. Alvin is the world’s most renowned human occupied submersible, continually operating since its commissioning in 1964. For over five decades and 5000+ dives, Alvin has advanced our understanding of the Earth’s ocean environments, uncovering many significant scientific discoveries along the way. Alvin was recently certified to 6500m and now has the ability to explore over 98% of the ocean floor (Video).
Internship Description: The selected intern will work full-time with engineers, technicians and other team members at the WHOI facility in Woods Hole, MA. The Alvin Group is interested in hosting a technically-inclined and responsible intern who enjoys understanding about and working with marine instruments and technologies. The ideal candidate for this internship is mature, motivated, and has a positive attitude. A foundational understanding and skill in electrical and mechanical engineering are highly desirable. UNOLS will pay a $600 per week subsistence stipend, a $200 per week meal plan, lodging, and pre-approved travel expenses. Internship projects will correspond with the objectives set by the hosting institution. A work plan will be established at the start of the internship and updated as needed.
To apply, read the requirements listed below, prepare your documents, and complete the online application:
NOTE: we recommend typing/saving short responses in a Word document, then copying/pasting them into the application form when you are ready to submit.
Requirements:
- Applicants should demonstrate a high interest in the field of Marine Engineering & Technology in support of oceanographic research.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or U.S. permanent residents.
- Applicants must be enrolled in or a recent graduate from an accredited higher education institution in the U.S.
- Applicants must be available full-time during the internship period.
- This is a long-term internship. Former MATE Interns who have completed a short-term internship may apply.

- Contact information for three (3) professional references.
- Your most current professional resume (2-page maximum).
- A letter of recommendation from an instructor or a supervisor, preferably someone who has knowledge of your engineering/technical skills. If your professional reference prefers to submit a letter directly to the Program Manager, please share this link with them: 2025-26 UNOLS-MATE Internship Recommendation Form

Engineering Our Future
We identified five strategic priorities to focus on for the next five years. For each of these priorities, we set goals with identified metrics for our college:
Good to Know
Innovation Park Trail and Pond Restoration
Cleanup and restoration work is now underway to address tornado damage to the trail and pond in the wooded area between West and East Paul Dirac Drive, behind the National High Magnetic Laboratory. To ensure the safety of all users, the trail will remain closed during the restoration period. The work is expected to be completed by mid-September, weather permitting.
