ASEMFL Annual Meeting
The Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL) is a state academy of science which recognizes the work of individuals in the State of Florida who have made major achievements in science, engineering and medicine. FSU serves as an institutional member, supporting this nonprofit, and at present, Greg Boebinger serves on its Board of Directors. ASEMFL membership is made of NASEM members who work or reside in Florida, plus Florida faculty members who have been elected to membership in recognition of their accomplishments.
This coming fall, the ASEMFL annual conference is open to all interested in attending – including the public. They are encouraging attendance by engineering faculty, post-docs, and students. As the save the date (attached) notes, this is an “ideal professional venue for engaging with National Academy Members and luminaries in Science, Engineering and Medicine across the state of Florida.” The conference is in Orlando and has a modest registration fee of $25 for students and post-docs and $250 for faculty/administrators/general public.
Just for Graduate Students & Post-Docs: Included on that registration page is the portal for the graduate student/post-doc poster session. Graduate students and post-docs are invited to apply to participate in the poster session here: https://www.asemfl.org/poster-submission-portal/ using the attached “trainee” instructions. The deadline is August 29, 2025.
Just for Assistant Professors: Also included is an invitation for early-career faculty to self-nominate as a Rising Star: https://www.asemfl.org/rising-stars-portal/ Faculty earning the designation of Rising Stars are expected to deliver a 3-minute “rapid-fire talk” to present their cutting-edge research in a “concise and impactful” one slide format. Rising Stars are required to fully participate in the two-day conference, but the conference fee is then waived.
Last year 3 engineering faculty applied, and Daniel Hallinan was elected as a Rising Star; we’d like to see more apply this year and Sonja Carter is available to help candidates craft and edit their “statement of contribution” and citation. She is responsible for tracking nomination attempts for FSU, so even if a faculty member doesn’t want or need my editing expertise, they must inform her that they are nominating themselves for my records. The deadline is August 1, 2025.
