Senior Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies Farrukh Alvi was recently tapped to serve as interim dean during the nationwide search for J. Murray Gibson’s replacement.

FAMU Provost Maurice Edington and FSU Provost Sally McRorie have announced Farrukh Alvi, Ph.D., as interim dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering while a nationwide search is underway to replace J. Murray Gibson, Ph.D., who is returning to the mechanical engineering faculty at the end of calendar year 2021.

Alvi is the senior associate dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the college and has served in this role since 2016. He has shepherded the growth of our external funding by almost 50 percent and our graduate enrollment by 40 percent. Alvi, a professor of mechanical engineering, is internationally recognized as a leader in aerospace research, and was the founding director of the Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP). Over his career at the college, he has taught and mentored many undergraduate and graduate students.

“I am very confident that Dr. Alvi’s experience and leadership skills will ensure that the college remains on track during the open search for my replacement, and I am grateful that he has agreed to take on this important responsibility,” said Dean Gibson.

“I am honored to be asked to lead this great college during a time of transition,” Alvi said. “Our faculty and staff are top-notch and I’m confident they will continue to provide a world-class education and research atmosphere during this phase.”
