Abstract:

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is a national leader in advancing transportation safety, mobility, and innovation. In this presentation, Christine Shafik, leader of FDOT’s Connected Mobility and Technologies Program, will share insights into Florida’s deployment of connected and automated vehicle technologies, statewide arterial management, wrong-way driving prevention, managed lanes operations, and data-driven traffic management systems. She will also reflect on her professional journey, discussing key challenges, lessons learned, and the skills and mindset needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving engineering field. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of emerging transportation technologies, the future of the industry, and practical career advice from a leader shaping Florida’s transportation network.

Bio:

Christine serves as the FDOT State Connected Mobility and Technologies Engineer, providing statewide leadership for Florida’s Connected Automated Vehicle (CAV)/Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) program and supporting technologies, while also leading the TSM&O Software, Statewide Arterial Management, Wrong Way Driving, and Managed Lanes programs. With 18 years serving the State of Florida, she has held diverse roles across program management, planning, design, and statewide construction project and contract management. She holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and multiple professional certifications, including Florida Professional Engineer, Certified Public Manager, Project Management Professional, and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt. In 2025, she received the FDOT Leader of the Year award, and under her leadership, FDOT programs earned several ITE Transportation Project Awards, including the 2024 Wrong Way Driving Program, the 2024 V2X Data Exchange Platform & TSMO Data Digital Infrastructure, and the 2025 Emergency Shoulder Use (ESU) Dashboard and Reports.
