Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has increasingly dominated media discourse, particularly following the emergence of generative AI models such as ChatGPT, which have significantly expanded AI accessibility beyond traditional data science and computer engineering domains. Nonetheless, AI itself is not a recent innovation—it has evolved progressively over several decades. The contemporary AI revolution is notably impactful due to its unprecedented power and ease of implementation. Civil engineers, therefore, must actively engage with this technological transformation to remain effective and relevant. AI presents practical solutions for numerous real-world engineering challenges, including data-driven decision-making, infrastructure digital twins, budget optimization, and anomaly detection through computer vision. In this seminar, Dr. Elbagalati will introduce key emerging technologies and discuss AI applications he has personally implemented, such as smart tagging for asset management, drone-enabled infrastructure inspections and 3D modeling, as well as AI-driven clustering algorithms for project planning. These innovations are instrumental in shaping the future of civil engineering, and this session will examine strategies for effectively integrating these technologies into engineering practices to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Omar Elbagalati, PhD, P.E., is the Director of Market Insights and Research at Michelin Mobility Intelligence. He is involved in presenting research findings and participating in industry events such as the Transportation Research Board (TRB) annual meeting. His work focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence and data analytics to enhance road assessment processes and pavement management. Dr. Elbagalati collaborates with academic institutions and other experts to advance the field of transportation and road safety.
