CEE Grad Student Seminar: Shenghua Wu
"Addressing the Microplastic Challenge: Interdisciplinary Insights and Technical Innovations from the Gulf Coast"
This event is sponsored by FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
Abstract: Microplastic pollution—defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 mm—poses a critical threat to the ecological integrity and economic vitality of the Gulf Coast. This presentation highlights the collaborative initiatives of the Gulf Coast Center for Addressing Microplastic Pollution (GC-CAMP) at the University of South Alabama. Our interdisciplinary research framework spans a diverse portfolio: from quantifying microplastic types and concentrations in wastewater facilities across Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida to engineering sustainable remediation solutions such as biochar-based adsorption. We further explore technical advancements in analytical precision and the circular potential of repurposing plastics for construction materials. This presentation also provides insight into bridging engineering and environmental science, offering a scalable model for mitigating complex contaminants through regional synergy and technical innovation.
