Dr. Ali Abdelhafiz graduated with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, where he developed an innovative design for the green synthesis of aluminum foam, building a strong foundation in engineering principles and materials science. He earned his M.Sc. in Nanotechnology, focusing on polymer nanocomposites for advanced membrane separation applications. Dr. Abdelhafiz completed his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech, specializing in surface science and strain engineering of 2D materials for energy conversion. His expertise extends to bandgap engineering of 1D semiconductors for photoelectrochemical energy harvesting and water treatment.

From 2019 to 2026 at MIT, Dr. Ali Abdelhafiz advanced accelerated materials discovery by integrating high-throughput experimentation, automation, in situ characterization and machine learning. His research addresses sustainable fuel production, energy-device optimization, and nuclear materials for high-temperature and radiation-resistant environments. He also led a multiyear collaboration with Honda Automotives, supported by more than $1.2 million in funding; that resulted in several patent applications. Dr. Abdelhafiz has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed journal publications and delivered more than 25 conference presentations and invited talks.
