Frequently Asked Cybersecurity Questions, Answered!
As technology advances, humanity becomes more dependent on devices each day. Our personal, social, academic and financial lives can all be accessed through online systems. Have you ever wanted to learn more about cybersecurity? We asked some of our top cybersecurity professors, Saeed Rajput, PhD. and Abdulrahman Takkidin, Ph.D. for their input.
What is cybersecurity?
On one hand, cybersecurity deals with building hardware and software to be safe from all forms of attack. Not only is it built safely, but it’s designed to defend digital infrastructure. On the other hand, cybersecurity also focuses on the ability to detect attacks, system vulnerabilities and develop system security policies. Security policy allows businesses to conduct risk analysis and keep important data safe. Because of technology’s large influence on all forms of business, the field of cybersecurity needs people from law, government, computer science, city planning and much more.
Why is cybersecurity important?
Businesses first utilized cryptography for niche applications such as connected backend banking systems and home offices. Now, cybersecurity has advanced to include so many other domains like antiviruses, firewalls, VPNs and more. The number of security products has increased from just a few thousand to billions.
What are the perks of a Cybersecurity Certificate over a Cybersecurity Degree?
Due to the complexity of the cybersecurity field, it needs participants from diverse fields. A degree in cybersecurity can take up to four years and focus on the handling of security products rather than students developing their own. However, the Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity for Engineers prepares engineering students for CISSP certification. They will learn how to modify existing systems, analyze digital assets and analyze new attacks yet to be developed.
According to Cyberseek, 30% of new job openings require CISSP certifications, indicating a demand. The most popular cybersecurity positions are currently Information Security Analyst, Software Developer, Vulnerability Analyst and Machine Learning Engineer.
How will a Cybersecurity Certificate impact my career?
Cybersecurity jobs aren’t the only thing you need to focus on, since there are so many applications learned through the online cybersecurity courses. The extra skills and knowledge can be utilized in industries including automotive, financial, healthcare, energy and even online gaming. Cybersecurity salaries have also increased compared to previous years. Completing the CISSP exam is known to increase annual salary from 10% to 20% due to its specialized nature. Glassdoor projects a cybersecurity salary in Florida to range from $121K to $194K.
Does Florida A&M University have cybersecurity? Does FSU have cybersecurity?
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) and Florida State University (FSU) offer an advanced cybersecurity certificate through the joint engineering college for engineers interested in cybersecurity classes. The Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity for Engineers is a 12-credit program consisting of four graduate-level courses. The program works with your schedule and can be completed in as little as three semesters, completely online or in person.
Although FAMU and FSU have their own cybersecurity degree programs through their computer science departments, the certificate program offered at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is designed specifically for engineers!
