The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering invites applications for a Teaching Faculty I/Professor of Practice (full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track faculty) position. The appointment rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience. The professor’s role is to promote the integration of academic scholarship with practical experience, primarily by instructing and guiding students through real-world design.
The IME Department currently has about 19 faculty, 34 PhD students, 106 MS students, 162 undergraduate students, and annual research expenditures exceeding $3.3M. The two universities and outstanding research facilities in the affiliated research buildings/centers provide opportunities for collaboration with faculty in Computer Science, Scientific Computing, Statistics, High-Performance Materials Institute (HPMI), Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP), the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS), National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), and FSU College of Medicine.

Preferred and Required Qualifications 

The qualified candidate must have an earned doctoral degree (preferred), or a master’s degree with a minimum of 10-year experience in industrial engineering or a closely related field. Significant design experience is required of the candidate. Candidates must have demonstrated teaching experience, either at the college level or in practice-based education such as workshops and short courses. Experience with professional organizations such as ABET, ASEE, IISE, SME, INCOSE, ASME, etc. is highly desirable and a demonstrated service in one’s professional career. Applicants should have significant, high-level Industry experience, have demonstrated managerial and/or technical leadership in their field, should be driven to share that experience with students to facilitate learning and should be able to prepare students for their professional careers. Potential for outreach and interaction with the educational and engineering communities is essential.


Responsibilities will be to teach the department’s two-semester senior design course sequence and other undergraduate courses as required. This includes developing and coordinating student design projects and establishing mentor relationships with practicing engineers who have expertise in a variety of Industrial and Manufacturing disciplines. Additional teaching responsibilities will include courses in the applicant’s area(s) of expertise, preferably advanced undergraduate and design courses. The selected applicant will help the department build relationships and collaborations with engineers, companies, and alumni in the community and state, as well as assist with the department’s advisory board. Research activity is not expected, although a small amount is allowed.
