Rajendra K. Arora's formal education includes: BS (Honors) (physics), University of Delhi, St. Stephen's College (1956); Diploma of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (electrical communication engineering) (1959); and Ph.D. (electrical engineering), University of St. Andrews, Queen's College (now the University of Dundee), Dundee, UK (1965). From 1959 to 1972 he was on the faculty of the University of Roorkee (now the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee) (Professor since 1969). In 1972 he became a Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi where he also served as the Dean of Students (1976-77) and as Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering (1982-84). From 1984 to 1986 he was a Visiting Professor at Clemson University, South Carolina. In 1987 he moved to his present position of Professor at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, where he also is the founder-director of the Electromagnetics Research Laboratory. He was Interim Department Chair during 1998-1999. He spent a year (1977-78) as a National Research Council Visiting Scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Boulder, Colorado; and has held short visiting positions at the University of California, Santa Barbara; the Université de Rennes, France; the University College London; and Allison Gas Turbine Division, General Motors Corporation, Indianapolis.
Dr. Arora's research focuses on electromagnetics (including antennas, microwaves, and quasi-optical techniques), photonics, and bioelectrical engineering. He has published extensively, taught, guided research, and conducted sponsored research extensively in these areas.
Recognition of his efforts includes: IEEE Centennial Medal, Florida A&M University Teaching Incentive Program Award, Florida State University Excellence in Teaching Award, the (highest) University of Roorkee Khosla Research Award, the Commonwealth Scholarship Award (UK), Khosla Research Silver Medal, and other research prizes. He is a Life Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, a Life Senior Member of the IEEE, a member of the ASEE and SPIE, and a past Chairman of the IEEE Delhi Section.
