Spring 2017 FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Academic Calendar Misalignment

As you may know, there is a misalignment between the academic calendars at FAMU and FSU for the spring 2017 semester. Therefore, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering will operate on the modified academic calendar shown below. Please note that students will follow the Spring Break period of their home institution. Therefore, no engineering classes will be held during the period from Monday, March 6, 2017 to Friday, March 17, 2017.

To compensate for missing two weeks of classroom instruction, course instructors will be required to schedule one week of instruction via the equivalent amount of make-up class sections during the semester. These make-up sessions may be face-to-face, online, or a combination of the two. Additionally, the ending time for all courses taught at the college will be extended by the equivalent of 4 minutes for each 50 minute class period or 6 minutes for each 75 minute class period. Class starting times will remain unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why can’t the two academic calendars just be re-aligned again?

This problem was not noticed until after the 2017-2017 academic calendars had been officially published by the two universities. So, it was too late to correct the misalignment for this upcoming academic year. However, to avoid this issue from occurring in the future, both universities have agreed to allow a representative from the College of Engineering to participate in the development of the annual academic calendar.

  1. What does this mean for FAMU Engineering Students?

For FAMU students, your non-engineering main campus classes will begin on Thursday, January 5th. We have arranged with the FAMU Office of the Registrar to extend the last day of Drop/Add for engineering courses only until Thursday, 1/12/2017. The last day of Drop/Add for non-engineering main campus courses will not change from the date posted on the FAMU Registrar's website. Slightly. If you are only taking engineering courses, each class session will be extended a few minutes which will reduce the time you'll have between classes.
